A domino set typically consists of 28 tiles (though larger sets exist for games like Mexican Train and Chicken Foot). Each rectangular tile is divided into two square ends, each marked with a number of pips or blank. Different countries have their own favored domino games: England (Muggins), Scandinavia (Bergen), Mexico (Mexican Train), and Spain (Matador). Dominoes originated in Song Dynasty China and later spread to Italy in the 18th century.
General Domino Rules (Illustrative):
-
Blocking Games: Players take turns placing tiles to extend a line, matching adjacent ends. The first to play all their tiles wins. If the game is blocked, the player who caused the block receives penalty points. Starting tiles vary by game (e.g., highest double in Muggins, 0-0 in Bergen).
-
Scoring Games: Points are awarded for specific tile combinations or emptying one's hand. Variations like Muggins require open ends to sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored for matching open ends. In Mexican Train, the double zero is worth 50 points. Failure to call "domino" (when applicable) before placing a tile can result in penalties.
-
Draw Games: Players can draw tiles from the remaining stock before playing. The score is the sum of pips in the loser's hand and the stock.
Mexican Train is now available! Enjoy free online play (Draw, Block, and Muggins)!
