Author : Penelope Update:Apr 13,2025

Summary

  • Genki showcased a mockup of the Switch 2 at CES.
  • CEO Eddie Tsai confirmed details like magnetic Joy-Con and an optical sensor.
  • The upcoming Switch 2 is still slim enough to fit the current dock but isn't compatible with it.

The CEO of Genki, Eddie Tsai, has shed light on the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, confirming several swirling rumors. The latest revelations surfaced at CES 2025, where Genki, known for their innovative gaming gadgets such as the PocketPro controller, unveiled a 3D-printed mockup of the Nintendo Switch 2. This mockup, based on a Switch 2 purportedly obtained from the black market, served as a platform to demonstrate the accessories Genki is developing for the new console.

During the event, the 3D-printed model was passed around for close inspection. It showcased a design that aligns more closely with the Valve’s Steam Deck in terms of size, and featured magnetic Joy-Con, a second USB-C port, and a mysterious new button labeled “C.”

In a detailed interview with The Verge, Eddie Tsai clarified some of the most talked-about features of the Switch 2 mockup. He confirmed that the Joy-Con on the new console are indeed magnetic, particularly the SL and SR buttons. To detach them, users press a large button on each Joy-Con, which releases a pin that breaks the magnetic connection with the console's chassis. Despite the switch from the current-gen Switch’s sliding rails to magnets, Tsai assured that the Joy-Con remain secure during gameplay.

Genki Shares Additional Details About the Switch 2

Eddie Tsai also revealed other intriguing details about the upcoming Switch 2. Each Joy-Con's "mounting channel" includes an optical sensor, suggesting potential new uses for the Joy-Con, possibly as a mouse with a new attachment that might connect via the magnetic SL and SR buttons. Recent leaks of Switch 2 images seem to corroborate this, with many observers noting the presence of optical sensors on the new Joy-Con.

Despite its larger dimensions, the Switch 2 maintains a slim profile that allows it to fit into the current Nintendo Switch dock. However, specific indentations on the new console prevent it from being compatible with the original dock. As for the enigmatic "C" button and the additional USB-C port, Genki remains in the dark about their purposes.
