Who Is Kojima’s New ‘Solid Snake’ and Why Death Stranding 2 Looks Like the Closest We’ll Ever Get to Another Metal Gear Solid

Kojima Productions unveiled a captivating 10-minute trailer for Death Stranding 2 at SXSW, introducing familiar faces like Norman Reedus and Léa Seydoux alongside a newcomer: Luca Marinelli. Marinelli's character, Neil, isn't just a new addition; his presence hints at a profound connection to Kojima's iconic Metal Gear Solid series.

Who is Luca Marinelli Playing in Death Stranding 2?

Marinelli portrays Neil in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, lending both his voice and likeness. While primarily known for Italian-language films, English-speaking audiences may recognize him as Nicky from Netflix's The Old Guard. The trailer depicts Neil in an interrogation, seemingly implicated in illicit activities for a mysterious figure. Later, a conversation with Lucy (played by Marinelli's wife, Alissa Jung) reveals a romantic relationship and Neil's involvement in smuggling: brain-dead pregnant women.

Wait, Brain-Dead Pregnant Women?

This shocking detail connects to the original Death Stranding's Bridge Babies (BBs) – seven-month fetuses from brain-dead mothers, crucial for detecting Beached Things (BTs). The US government's past experimentation with BBs, culminating in a devastating Voidout in Manhattan, is revisited. Neil's smuggling operation suggests a continuation of this clandestine research.

Is Solid Snake in Death Stranding 2?

The trailer's final shot of Neil with a bandana strikingly resembles Solid Snake. While not explicitly Snake, the visual similarity is deliberate. A 2020 Instagram post by Hideo Kojima highlighted Marinelli, commenting that he'd look like Snake with a bandana – a prediction fulfilled in the trailer. The universes remain distinct, but the reference is undeniable.

How Death Stranding 2 Connects to Metal Gear Solid

The resemblance isn't mere fan service. The trailer heavily evokes Metal Gear, with Neil becoming Beached, mirroring Cliff Unger's fate. His Beached form leads undead soldiers, and the narrator mentions the resurgence of US gun culture, echoing Metal Gear's themes of weapon proliferation and its corrosive effect on humanity. This anti-armament stance is a recurring motif in Kojima's work. Neil's existence could be interpreted as a metaphysical "version" of Snake, trapped within the Death Stranding universe.

Further Metal Gear allusions include Heartman's fusion of the DHV Magellan with a colossal BT, reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid 5's Sahelanthropus. The trailer's cinematic style, mirroring the Metal Gear Solid 5 Red Band trailer, reinforces the connection.

Will There Be Another Kojima Metal Gear Solid Game?

The likelihood of another Kojima-directed Metal Gear Solid game is slim. His departure from Konami severed his ties with the franchise. However, Death Stranding 2 demonstrates a clear continuation of his thematic and visual language, creating a spiritual successor that expands on his established themes and stylistic choices within a new narrative framework. With its expansive environments, emphasis on combat, and clear thematic resonance with the Metal Gear series, Death Stranding 2 feels like a new chapter in Kojima's creative vision, even without the familiar name.
