A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on the often-overlooked Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Unlike the readily available Nintendo Switch Online GBA games, this list highlights ten standout titles, four from GBA and six from Nintendo DS, found independently on the eShop. No particular order is implied.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version offers a solid, enjoyable experience. A worthwhile comparison to the original, and a more streamlined playthrough for some. Regardless of version, Steel Empire is a captivating shooter, even for those not typically drawn to the genre.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
While the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged as a triumphant successor on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title, the first in an excellent series, may have some initial rough edges, but these are smoothed out in later installments. Start here and explore the series' evolution.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A Mega Man double-feature is justified here, as Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinctly different, yet equally compelling gameplay. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept, existing within electronic devices, is cleverly executed. While later entries see diminishing returns, this first game is highly entertaining.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is worth playing through entirely, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For some, it even surpasses the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is so engaging that any grinding feels worthwhile. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, propelled the Half-Genie Hero into the spotlight. Its success has ensured Shantae's presence across subsequent consoles. Interestingly, this title's roots trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA game in its origins (though unlocalized at the time), Ace Attorney is a celebrated adventure game. It blends on-site investigations with dramatic courtroom sequences, offering witty humor and compelling narratives. The first game sets a high bar, though later installments are also highly regarded.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same writing quality but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, you use your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery surrounding your death. A captivating and rewarding experience, deserving of more recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, The World Ends With You is ideally experienced on its original hardware. While ports haven't perfectly replicated the original experience, the Switch version offers a viable alternative for those without a DS. A truly exceptional game.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are worthy, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three DS titles in this collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
This franchise's unique style translates somewhat challenging to platforms beyond the DS/3DS. Atlus's adaptation is playable, and each Etrian Odyssey game offers a substantial RPG experience. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a rewarding, albeit complex, adventure.
