11 Bit Studios, the acclaimed Polish developer, has unveiled a new trailer for their eagerly awaited sci-fi adventure, The Alters. As the release date draws near, the studio took a moment to reminisce about one of their most impactful projects, This War of Mine, which garnered them international acclaim more than a decade ago. While This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and often bleak atmosphere, The Alters introduces a more vibrant and frequently humorous narrative, focusing on the trials faced by alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite the stark contrast in tone, 11 Bit Studios underscores a deep thematic link between the two games.
Although This War of Mine and The Alters diverge significantly in their settings and emotional tones, both are fundamentally about survival. In This War of Mine, players are thrust into the gritty realities of war, managing resources and facing daily challenges to keep a group of civilians alive in a besieged city. Conversely, The Alters frames survival as a relentless race against time, where players must continuously relocate their mobile base to escape the destructive path of a merciless sun that turns everything to dust.
Both titles challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, venturing into hostile territories in search of vital resources. The primary distinction between the two lies in their protagonists: This War of Mine involves guiding a diverse group of civilians, whereas The Alters features a unique ensemble made up of different versions of the main character, Jan Dolski.
The Alters is slated for release in 2025 and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, the game will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from launch day, offering players an immediate opportunity to dive into this innovative survival experience.
