Avowed director Carrie Patel has departed Obsidian Entertainment, the renowned RPG studio, shortly after the launch of its latest title.
Updating her LinkedIn profile, Patel announced she's joining Night School Studio—the Netflix-owned developer behind the Oxenbreak narrative adventure series—in a game director role.
"Excited to share I'm beginning a new chapter as Game Director at Night School: A Netflix Game Studio!" Patel shared. While her specific project remains undisclosed, she'll resume her directing duties at the narrative-focused developer.
Night School gained recognition through its Oxenfree franchise, most recently releasing Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals in 2023. The studio debuted Black Mirror spinoff Thronglets earlier this year amidst undisclosed layoffs, following Netflix's closure of another internal studio working on a Joseph Staten-led AAA project.
Patel dedicated 11 years to Obsidian, contributing to acclaimed titles like The Outer Worlds and Pillars of Eternity series before helming Avowed following its creative reboot.
Originally conceived with darker fantasy tones and multiplayer elements akin to Elder Scrolls, Avowed evolved under Patel's direction into a vibrant, single-player experience featuring multiple expansive zones.

While Avowed received favorable reviews—with IGN praising its signature Obsidian storytelling—the game's conventional fantasy approach drew some criticism for playing it safe creatively.
The studio recently outlined post-launch support including Photo Mode and New Game Plus updates arriving over the next six months. Patel had previously discussed potential expansions and sequels she'll no longer oversee.
Obsidian's upcoming showcase will feature The Outer Worlds 2 during June's Xbox Games Showcase.
