Larian Studios, the creators of the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. This transition includes a self-imposed "media blackout," signaling a period of limited public communication regarding their future endeavors.
While Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's CEO, Swen Vincke, confirmed via Twitter and a statement to VideoGamer that the studio's full attention is dedicated to its next title. This new game will mark a departure from the studio's recent work, as it will neither be a Baldur's Gate sequel nor a Dungeons & Dragons-based title. Instead, it represents a fresh creative direction for Larian, a decision made after internal discussions revealed a lack of enthusiasm for a direct Baldur's Gate follow-up.
Previous statements from Vincke offer limited clues about the nature of this new project. In November 2023, he hinted at a game that would "push many boundaries," and in July 2023, he mentioned the eventual return to the Divinity: Original Sin universe, though not as the immediate next project.
The possibility of a new IP set in a completely different universe remains open. Considering Larian's established expertise in fantasy RPGs, speculation ranges from a science fiction setting to a contemporary one, or even a venture into a completely new genre. Given the ambitious nature of their past projects and the current media silence, it's likely that significant time – potentially years – will pass before any concrete details are revealed.
