In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits players near the game's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this dilemma, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries significant weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High rolls (30+) may be needed during key interactions to influence companion decisions. Spoilers follow.
Should You Free Orpheus?
This depends on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).
Siding with the Emperor: The Emperor absorbs Orpheus' knowledge, potentially alienating Lae'zel and Karlach due to Orpheus' importance to their personal quests. This guarantees victory over the Netherbrain but might disappoint players invested in these companions.
Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to align with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain, and he'll even willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people if asked.
Ultimately, choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; free Orpheus if you accept the risk of Illithid transformation. The Emperor's choice might anger Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.
The Moral Choice?
This is subjective but centers on loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki character might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives might seem overly demanding. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions impact the wider world.
The Emperor is generally benevolent, aiming to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts the necessity of sacrifice. Choosing him might lead to Illithid transformation, but it's a morally sound path. Remember, BG3 has multiple endings; strategic choices can lead to optimal outcomes for all involved.
