The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a fresh update almost half a century later with Breakout Beyond. This modern take, developed by Choice Provisions—the creative minds behind the BIT.TRIP series—retains the classic paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique horizontal progression. Players will move from left to right, smashing through bricks and watching as the lights and effects grow more intense with each successful combo.
Breakout Beyond isn't just about breaking bricks; it's about experiencing spectacular effects triggered by special bricks. From massive explosions to deploying an actual laser cannon, the game promises a dynamic and visually stunning experience. With 72 meticulously designed levels and an unlockable endless mode featuring a global leaderboard, players can test their skills against the best. For those who prefer company, a local two-player co-op mode is also available.
Originally intended as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took a turn when Atari stepped in to acquire and complete the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed excitement about bringing this gem to players, praising its innovative twist on the timeless Breakout formula. "Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make," Stearns remarked.
The Intellivision Amico, which was announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks, remaining unreleased to date. Atari's acquisition of the Intellivision branding and rights last year did not include the Amico.
Gamers can look forward to the launch of Breakout Beyond later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
