Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role. While the series will focus on a new Slayer, Gellar's involvement is rumored to be a recurring one.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not participating in this reboot.
This reboot comes after allegations of a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel, were leveled against Whedon.
Plot details remain scarce, but the new series will center on a fresh Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return as Buffy.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. She was aided by her friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The franchise continued through a series of comic books following the TV series and its spin-off, Angel.
