Basic Information
The Elytra is a unique, rare item enabling players to glide gracefully through the air. Its use dramatically increases exploration efficiency, especially when combined with fireworks. While appearing as wings in flight, they fold neatly into a cloak-like appearance when not in use. 
Naturally, Elytra are found only in the End after defeating the Ender Dragon, specifically within End City ships. However, alternative acquisition methods exist for other game modes, detailed below.
How to Get Elytra in Minecraft Survival Mode
Preparing for Battle
Thorough preparation is key. Diamond or Netherite armor, ideally enchanted for superior protection, is essential. A well-enchanted sword and bow (consider Infinity or Power for the bow) are crucial for ranged and melee combat against the Ender Dragon. Stock up on arrows or crossbow bolts, and don't forget fireworks for extra firepower. Potions of regeneration, strength, and slow falling offer significant advantages. Golden apples provide crucial emergency healing, and blocks aid in reaching End Crystals. Finally, a carved pumpkin prevents unwanted Enderman aggression.
Activating the Portal to the End

Finding the Stronghold

Destroy the End Crystals first (bow and arrow or melee), then engage the Ender Dragon. Ranged attacks are generally more effective. 
Inside the Ship
After defeating the dragon, travel through the End Gateway. Locate an End City ship; the Elytra is usually found in an item frame within. Beware of Shulkers! 
Creative Mode
In Creative Mode, simply open your inventory (E), search for "Elytra," and drag it into your inventory.

How to Fly with Elytra
Equip the Elytra in your chest slot. Jump from a height and use spacebar to glide. W, A, S, D control movement.
