The critically acclaimed series Shōgun, which swept 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is set to return for a highly anticipated second season. According to an official press release from FX, Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays the pilot John Blackthorn, will reprise his role and also step into the position of co-executive producer for Season 2.
Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the lead role and signed on for the new season last May following the show's renewal, has been promoted to executive producer after his contributions to the original series. Production for Season 2 is scheduled to commence in January 2026 in Vancouver, the same location where the first season was filmed.
FX has described the upcoming season as "a wholly original new chapter to the first season," which was based on James Clavell’s novel. The network provided insight into the narrative connection between the two seasons:"In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
"Part two of Shōgun is set 10 years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.”
Fans can look forward to new episodes potentially by the end of 2026, though for now, all we can do is wait and hope for the best.
