Gems are craftable, equippable items. Unlocking their creation requires a few steps. After joining Liu Bei's Volunteer Army in Chapter 1, visit an Inn to receive a letter from Zhang Fei, introducing Gems and their raw material: Pyroxene.
Pyroxene is found throughout the overworld as large, jewel-like formations. These spawn randomly, so explore while traveling between battles. They're also rewards for side quests, collecting Old Coins, and reading Inn letters, ensuring a steady supply.
