In the latest wave of "here comes a new remake" announcements—or, for the optimists among us, "another Stephen King movie is on the way"—Netflix is gearing up to unleash a fresh adaptation of the iconic novel Cujo. According to Deadline, the streaming giant has enlisted Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee to bring this chilling tale back to life. However, the project is still in its infancy, with no writers, directors, or cast members attached yet.
Stephen King's Cujo was first published in 1981 and swiftly transformed into a 1983 cult classic horror film, scripted by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, and directed by Lewis Teague. The story centers on a devoted mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who faces a harrowing ordeal to protect her young son from a rabid dog. Trapped in their car with a broken engine, the duo must battle not only Cujo—who turned deadly after a bat bite—but also the looming threat of heatstroke as they fight for survival.

Cujo is just one of many beloved Stephen King stories that have successfully transitioned to the screen over the years. Recently, there's been a notable resurgence of King adaptations. For instance, Oz Perkins' adaptation of King's short story The Monkey was released in February, and fans can look forward to more this year, including Glen Powell's take on The Running Man and JT Mollner's adaptation of The Long Walk (both also produced by Roy Lee and Vertigo). Additionally, the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry is set to premiere on HBO. Meanwhile, Carrie, another Stephen King classic and horror movie icon, is being reimagined as an eight-episode series on Prime Video, helmed by horror visionary Mike Flanagan.
Stephen King enthusiasts have been enjoying a feast of adaptations lately, and with the new Cujo on the horizon, there's even more to savor.
