Fighting Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a daunting challenge. In my playthrough, it took me over an hour to defeat this legendary warrior. Yet, there are compelling reasons to take him on. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu earns you bragging rights; it's a badge of honor among gamers. Secondly, if you align with Shu or Wei, you'll be forced to confront him in Chapter 4 during the Battle of Xiapi. Lastly, triumphing over him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only rewards you with the "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, if you beat him in the post-game. These incentives make the battle against Lu Bu a tempting prospect.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Before engaging Lu Bu, it's crucial to equip yourself with gear that can withstand his onslaught. A weapon like a sword, which can deliver multiple hits and stagger him, is essential. Additionally, choose Battle Arts that require minimal Bravery, activate quickly, and have a wide range. In my battle, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories such as Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, which boost your health and defense, are vital as Lu Bu's attacks can quickly drain your health. Opt for a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be your primary way to gain Bravery during the fight.
In most encounters, Lu Bu starts mounted on his horse, Red Hare. This phase is straightforward; Lu Bu charges around the area, occasionally stopping to rest. Use these moments to hit him with your Battle Arts, then retreat. His attacks have a limited area of effect, except when Red Hare jumps and crashes down, making them relatively easy to dodge. Once Lu Bu's health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle begins.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase
On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His attacks are swift and he moves rapidly across the battlefield. A red aura often surrounds him during his dashes, indicating he can't be staggered or interrupted. When he charges, evade and prepare for subsequent charges, as he typically performs them in sets of three. If he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can severely deplete your health, but it's easily evaded like his other charges.
His most dangerous move occurs when he glows orange, signaling an imminent attack where he launches three massive arrows at you three times. This can juggle and decimate your health. Equip a Battle Art like Absconding Slash to cancel this move from a distance; close-range Battle Arts like Palm Strike will result in your demise. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergency invincibility, which can save you from fatal mistakes.
Fortunately, Lu Bu is easier to juggle in this phase. Hitting him with consecutive attacks will quickly charge your Battle Arts and help break his Fortitude meter. Stay close to react promptly to his attacks and remember: evade, evade, evade.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently depleted, he enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. Now unstaggered, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use everything at your disposal—activate your Musou attacks when he's near, deploy Battle Arts, and strike fast and hard. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Breaking his Fortitude here will finally allow you to defeat this formidable opponent.
And that’s how to defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! Dynasty Warriors: Origins is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S
