Get ready, Guardian — Bungie has unveiled exciting updates for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, with two new expansions and major seasonal and core game updates coming to both paying and free players, all under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy."
The "Year of Prophecy" marks the first year to feature four "major content beats," comprising two paid expansions and two significant updates. While the expansions require purchase, the updates will be accessible to all players.
Kicking things off is Rite of the Nine, a "fresh take on dungeon diving" that's already available to all players at no additional cost. Even seasoned Guardians can look forward to "unique twists" in familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep. This update allows players to reconnect with Orin and explore refreshed dungeon weapons.
On July 15, the new expansion **Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate** will launch, marking the beginning of a "multiyear saga" that unfolds across multiple expansions. This paid expansion reintroduces the mysterious beings known as the Nine, who predate the Traveler. Two characters, new ally Lodi and Warlock Vanguard Ikora, will take center stage. The expansion is set on the new destination, Kepler, which is inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges of Destiny 2’s dungeons. Players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and "destination-specific abilities."Simultaneously on July 15, "major core game innovations" will be introduced, including revised armor and gear systems designed to enhance buildcrafting opportunities. A new activity selection screen called the Portal will also be added, allowing players to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops. Fireteam and Pinnacle Ops focus on quick and longer-form cooperative play, while Solo Ops cater to players seeking short, self-contained gameplay sessions. Players can further customize their activities with 50 new modifiers and curated activity rotations to chase specific rewards.

On September 9, the **Ash & Iron** major update will launch, followed by the second expansion, **Renegades**, on December 2. The year concludes with the **Shadow & Order** major update on March 3.Destiny 2: Renegades, the second expansion in the Year of Prophecy, draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," merging Destiny's storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.
These updates and expansions come at a crucial time for Bungie, following the layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, which represented 17% of its workforce, less than a year after another 100 layoffs.
While Destiny 2 remains a focal point, Bungie is also busy with **Marathon**, a reboot of a classic franchise revealed in May 2023. In IGN's hands-on preview of the alpha state, we noted, "After playing enough Marathon to get a pretty good feel for it, I’m already fairly confident it’ll scratch the Bungie PvP itch that’s been left unscratched for a number of years now. Here’s hoping they’ll knock it out of the park when it comes to PC and consoles in September."
