Diablo 4 fans anticipating a new expansion in 2025 will need to adjust their expectations. Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson recently announced at the DICE Summit that the next major expansion won't arrive until 2026.
Fergusson, while discussing plans to improve community engagement through content roadmaps (similar to Diablo Immortal and World of Warcraft), confirmed that a roadmap detailing Diablo 4's 2025 seasonal content and updates will be released soon. However, he explicitly stated the second expansion is not included in these 2025 plans.
The reason for the delay wasn't extensively detailed, but Fergusson alluded to challenges encountered during the development of the first expansion, "Vessel of Hatred." Originally slated for a 12-month release cycle, "Vessel of Hatred" experienced an 18-month development period due to unforeseen circumstances. He explained that responding to player feedback and adapting live content required reallocation of resources, impacting the expansion's timeline and subsequently delaying subsequent content.
This delay pushed the planned 2025 expansion into 2026. While this news may disappoint some, Fergusson emphasized that the 2025 roadmap will still provide players with a clear view of upcoming seasonal content and updates.
Diablo 4's recently released Season of Witchcraft introduces significant new features, including potent witchcraft abilities and a captivating new questline. The base game itself received a 9/10 rating, praised for its exceptional endgame and progression systems.
