"DOOM: The Dark Ages' Physical Edition Needs 80 GB Download, Fans Outraged"

Author : Grace Update:May 24,2025

Fans of DOOM: The Dark Ages are expressing their frustration over the game's physical edition, which shockingly includes only 85 MB on the disc. Set for an official release on May 15, some retailers have already sent out copies, even before the premium edition's promised 2-day early access. However, upon receiving their copies, fans were dismayed to find out that they need to download over 80 GB of data to actually play the game. This revelation was confirmed by Twitter (X) user @DoesItPlay1, who shared their experience on May 9 using a PS5. Screenshots showed that the game disc merely contains 85.01 MB and necessitates an internet connection for the necessary updates to enjoy the full experience.

The disappointment stems from Bethesda's handling of the physical copies, with many fans feeling that they don't truly own the game. Critics argue that the disc serves little purpose other than to initiate a massive download, calling it a waste of resources. Some fans have even decided to wait for the digital release instead. This decision by Bethesda has certainly stirred a negative reaction, leaving fans with no alternative but to download a substantial amount of data when the game launches.

Despite the controversy surrounding its physical distribution, DOOM: The Dark Ages has received positive feedback from early players. According to various Reddit posts, fans who managed to get their hands on the game have praised its story, user interface, weapons, and overall experience. Reddit user TCXIV, who received the collector's edition, described the game as "amazing" and a "trip," sharing numerous screenshots of the game's menus, interface, bestiary, demons, cutscenes, and major spoiler moments.

Here at Game8, we've given DOOM: The Dark Ages a score of 88 out of 100. We commend the game for its brutal revival of the DOOM series, shifting from the aerial dynamics of DOOM (2016) and Eternal to a more grounded, gritty combat experience.
