Although the game was first teased in 2022, it was not until late 2024 that alpha testing signups were opened for a new survival game set in the RuneScape universe. The official reveal as RuneScape: Dragonwilds happened on March 31, 2025.

Jagex has set their sights on an official release for Dragonwilds in early 2026. Early Access Roadmap Revealed
The early access roadmap for Dragonwilds showcases the exciting plans Jagex has in store. A new region, Fellhollow, will be introduced, a mystical land suspended between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This region is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and the cursed energy of the Underworld, with the iconic RuneScape character Death guiding players through new quests, lore, gear, and music. New skills in magic, ranged, and farming will also be available. Additionally, players can look forward to new enemy types like Lesser Dragons, dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, and a creative mode. While specific dates for these updates are not provided, Jagex promises continuous enhancements to the game.
