TouchArcade Rating: While updates for premium mobile ports are usually welcome for optimization or compatibility, Capcom's recent update (released an hour ago) for Resident Evil 7 biohazard (Free), Resident Evil 4 Remake (Free), and Resident Evil Village (Free) on iOS and iPadOS introduces a problematic online DRM system. This DRM verifies purchase history upon game launch, checking for ownership of the game and any DLC. Refusal results in game closure. This necessitates an internet connection for every launch, adding a delay even after verification and completely removing offline playability – a significant drawback compared to the previous offline functionality.
Pre-update testing confirmed offline playability. Post-update, the aforementioned alert (or a similar one) appears, forcing online verification. While this might not bother everyone, the addition of this always-online DRM to already-purchased games is concerning. Ideally, Capcom would implement a less intrusive purchase verification method, perhaps checking less frequently. This update unfortunately diminishes the appeal of Capcom's premium mobile ports.
