Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor
The upcoming Dynasty Warriors: Origins, slated for release on January 17, 2025, boasts a unique genesis. Omega Force, the developers, initially embarked on creating a tenth mainline Dynasty Warriors installment. However, technological advancements spurred a pivotal decision: the cancellation of Dynasty Warriors 10 to pave the way for a more ambitious and modern title.
This shift, detailed in an interview with 4Gamer and translated by SiliconEra, involved leveraging the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. The resulting game, Origins, retains the series' signature hack-and-slash combat within the Three Kingdoms setting, but with a significant upgrade in gameplay mechanics and strategic depth.
While Deluxe Edition players have already experienced Origins' fast-paced action, the game's development involved incorporating elements from its canceled predecessor. Producer Tomohiko Sho highlighted the impact of next-gen console power, prompting a strategic redirection. Producer Masamichi Oba revealed that the abandoned project, similar in structure to Dynasty Warriors 7, featured stage-clearing gameplay. Despite its cancellation, key elements, including the free-roaming map and a more in-depth exploration of the Three Kingdoms narrative, were salvaged and integrated into Origins. This decision, although difficult, ultimately allowed Omega Force to create a more refined and engaging experience. The game features a mysterious amnesiac protagonist interacting with iconic figures from the Three Kingdoms era.
