Chris Evans, the star of the Captain America films, has definitively stated that he will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for Avengers: Doomsday or any other future projects, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise. Evans directly refuted a Deadline article claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling the report "not true."
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, who inherited the Captain America mantle. Mackie initially stated that his manager informed him of Evans' return, but after speaking with Evans himself, learned that the actor is "happily retired" from the MCU. Evans confirmed this directly to Esquire, stating that rumors of his return have surfaced periodically since Avengers: Endgame and that he no longer addresses them.
While Evans did reprise his role as Johnny Storm from the Fox Fantastic Four films in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role, distinct from his central Captain America arc.
The MCU's future is currently somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise after his assault and harassment conviction. Majors, who was set to be the MCU's next Thanos-level antagonist as Kang, has been replaced, leading to speculation and rumors about other original Avengers returning.
This speculation was fueled by the announcement of Robert Downey Jr.'s return as Doctor Doom, the new main villain. However, no other original Avenger's return has been officially confirmed. Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which will reportedly feature Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter and continue the multiverse storyline.
