Final Fantasy XIV Suspends Housing Demolitions Due to California Wildfires
Square Enix has temporarily halted automatic housing demolition timers in Final Fantasy XIV on North American servers. This action, affecting players on the Aether, Primal, Crystal, and Dynamis data centers, comes in response to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. The company will announce a resumption date once the situation is assessed.
The decision follows a recent restart of the demolition timers. FFXIV employs a 45-day auto-demolition system to free up housing plots for inactive players or Free Companies. Owners can reset their timers by simply logging into their homes. However, Square Enix regularly pauses this system during major real-world events to prevent displacement of players facing disruptions like natural disasters. A previous pause, ending January 8th, was implemented following Hurricane Helene.
This latest suspension began on Thursday, January 9th, at 11:20 PM Eastern Time. While no timeline for restarting the timers has been given, homeowners can still reset their 45-day timers by visiting their properties.
The impact of the wildfires extends beyond the game. The popular web series, Critical Role, postponed a major event, and an NFL playoff game was relocated. The combination of this housing moratorium and the ongoing free login campaign has made for a busy start to 2025 for FFXIV players. The duration of the current suspension remains undetermined.
