Pocketpair's Surprise Nintendo eShop Launch Amidst Legal Battle
Pocketpair, the developer embroiled in a legal dispute with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, unexpectedly released its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This action-card game, blending tower defense and roguelike elements, marks Pocketpair's first Nintendo Switch release and follows months of controversy surrounding its popular game, Palworld.
The September 2024 lawsuit alleges that Palworld's Pal Spheres infringe on Pokémon's creature-capturing patents. Despite this ongoing legal challenge, Pocketpair celebrated OverDungeon's launch with a 50% discount, running until January 24th. The decision to release OverDungeon on the Nintendo eShop, while Palworld is available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, has sparked speculation online, with some suggesting it's a strategic response to the lawsuit.
OverDungeon, initially a Steam exclusive, arrived on the Nintendo Switch on January 9th without prior announcement. This move contrasts with Pocketpair's continued promotion and updates for Palworld, including a significant December update and a planned Terraria crossover extending into 2025. The company also hinted at future Palworld expansions, including Mac and mobile ports.
This isn't Pocketpair's first brush with comparisons to Nintendo franchises. Their 2020 RPG, Craftopia, drew comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Despite the similarities, Craftopia continues to receive updates on Steam.
The legal battle between Pocketpair, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company remains ongoing, with patent experts predicting a potentially lengthy process. The lack of public statements from any party involved adds to the intrigue surrounding Pocketpair's recent strategic moves.
