The delay of GTA 6 has sparked a range of reactions across the gaming industry, with EA expressing optimism about their upcoming Battlefield release, while other developers navigate their strategies in response. Dive in to discover EA's perspective on their game's launch and the varied responses from other developers to the GTA 6 delay.
GTA 6 Delay Effects and Reactions
Battlefield Release Window "Clearer Than It Was Before"
EA has solidified Battlefield's release window following the announcement of GTA 6's delay. In their Q4 and FY 2025 Earnings Conference Call on May 6, EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed that Battlefield will hit the shelves in March 2026. He expressed confidence in the timing, particularly due to GTA 6's postponed release.
When questioned about the impact of major game releases on their own launch schedules, Wilson noted that few companies can expedite their release dates to dodge GTA 6, as advancing a launch date is challenging. However, he was pleased with how things aligned for EA, allowing Battlefield to launch two months before GTA 6.
The timing of game launches has long been a concern for developers and publishers, especially since GTA 6's first trailer dropped. With the delay, many are recalibrating their plans, but EA feels confident about their strategy with Battlefield.
"Relative to Battlefield, we've consistently aimed for a release window that we believed was optimal," Wilson stated. "We wouldn't launch into a window that would undermine the value we've invested in the franchise or the enjoyment our players would get from it."
He affirmed that the "window is clearer than it was before," and they are optimistic about releasing Battlefield in 2026. The game is slated for release in March 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Death Stranding 2 Will Come Out Regardless of GTA 6’s Release Window
In contrast, Death Stranding 2 (DS2) Director Hideo Kojima remains steadfast in his release plans, regardless of GTA 6's schedule. During a Koji Pro radio broadcast, Kojima mentioned that DS2's launch date was set long ago and they intend to stick to it.
Kojima acknowledged rumors that GTA 6 was initially slated for a November release, which would prompt other companies to shift their launch dates. He likened this to the film industry's dynamics, saying, "For instance, if a new Mission Impossible movie were to release in May, others wouldn't dare to compete and would choose a different time."
Despite the industry's tendency to avoid clashing with GTA 6, Kojima is committed to his development timeline and is targeting a September release. With DS2 being 95% complete, its launch is imminent.
Other Developers Steer Clear, Devolver Digital Says Bring It On
For many developers, navigating around GTA 6's release window is crucial for their games' success. The Game Business Show reported in March that several game executives are prepared to adjust their release dates to avoid competing with the much-anticipated action-adventure title.
An anonymous executive revealed, "We will nudge our releases back or forward three weeks to avoid it. The challenge is that everyone is likely to do the same, resulting in a flurry of game releases three to four weeks before or after GTA 6, all aiming for what they believe is a safe zone."
On the flip side, Cult of the Lamb publisher Devolver Digital boldly announced plans to release a game on the same day as GTA 6. Although the specific title remains undisclosed, possibilities include follow-ups to popular games like Cult of the Lamb, Inscription, Hotline Miami, or even a new IP.
The delay of GTA 6 has sent ripples through the gaming industry, prompting adjustments in release schedules to either avoid or confront the titan. GTA 6 is now set to launch on May 26, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Keep up with the latest news on the game by checking out our detailed article below!
