Rockstar Games has postponed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026, shifting from its originally planned fall 2025 launch.
In an official announcement, the studio expressed regret over the substantial delay for what is anticipated to become the most significant entertainment launch in history.
"We sincerely apologize for this longer-than-expected wait," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming interest and enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto title have been genuinely humbling for our entire team. We extend our gratitude for your continued support and patience as we finalize the game.
"With every project we release, our objective remains consistent: to surpass player expectations. Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We hope our community understands that this additional development time is essential to meet the quality standards you rightfully expect.
"We are eager to share further updates in the near future."
While Rockstar's update confirms the revised GTA VI launch window, the absence of new media means fans continue waiting for the second official trailer. The statement also omits specific platform details, fueling speculation about a potential simultaneous PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in May 2026.
"There's always potential for schedule adjustments, and committing to absolute deadlines can sometimes complicate matters," commented Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two, when questioned by IGN in February about confidence in the original fall 2025 timeline. "That said, we remained highly optimistic about our progress."
In a new investor communication dated May 2, Zelnick endorsed the decision to move GTA VI into Take-Two's 2027 fiscal year.
"We wholeheartedly support Rockstar Games' choice to extend development, ensuring they can fully realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI. This title is positioned to redefine blockbuster entertainment and deliver an unparalleled experience for players worldwide.
“Although we approach schedule changes with serious consideration and recognize the immense global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, our dedication to quality remains unwavering. With our robust pipeline of upcoming titles, we anticipate sustained business growth and increased shareholder value across multiple years.”
GTA VI's rescheduling creates opportunities for numerous other titles scheduled for late 2025, allowing them more space to achieve commercial success. Upcoming games such as Gearbox's Borderlands 4, EA's Battlefield, Bungie's Marathon, and Sony's Ghost of Yotei will likely benefit from reduced competition. Nintendo, currently preparing its Switch 2 console, also stands to gain from the adjusted launch calendar.
Conversely, developers and publishers who accelerated their production cycles to avoid the initial fall 2025 GTA VI window may face challenges. Those with projects targeting a May 2026 release may now need to reconsider their marketing and distribution strategies.
