When you start a new game in Stardew Valley, you can adopt either a cat or a dog to join you on your farming adventures. Initially, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update changed that, allowing you to have multiple furry friends.
To unlock the ability to adopt more pets, you'll first need to maximize your friendship level with your existing pet. Here's how you can do it:
- Daily Care: Ensure you provide your current pet with a full bowl of water every day using your Watering Can. Remember, on rainy and snowy days, the bowl fills automatically.
- Petting: Make sure to pet your animal once a day. You'll know you've done it right when a heart bubble appears above their head. You can monitor your pet's friendship meter through the "Animals" tab in your pause menu.
Once your pet's friendship meter is full, Marnie will send you a notice in the mail about adopting additional pets available at her shop, located south of your farm. If you've managed to avoid adopting a pet during your first year, Marnie will send this notice at the start of Year 2.

After receiving Marnie's notice, head over to her shop during her regular hours, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). When you speak to Marnie at the counter, select the "Adopt Pets" option. You'll be presented with a list of 12 Pet Licenses, featuring various dogs, cats, and even turtles. Each license comes with a price tag, so ensure you have enough gold on hand.
The full list of Pet Licenses and their costs are as follows:

After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These bowls serve as a water source and a "home" for your pets, preventing their friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting their bowls can lead to them running away, costing you both a companion and your investment.
Pet Bowls are available under Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, each costing 5,000g and requiring 25 x Hardwood (harvested with a Copper Axe or better). It's wise to build these bowls before adopting your new pets to ensure no friendship points are lost.

For those looking to enhance their pets' environment, Marnie's Ranch offers additional decorative items such as Doghouses and Cat Trees. While these do not affect your pets' friendship meters, they add charm to your farm.
