Rogue Loops: A Hades-Inspired Roguelike with a Twist
The upcoming indie roguelike, Rogue Loops, is generating buzz with its striking resemblance to Hades, both visually and in its core gameplay loop. However, Rogue Loops introduces a unique mechanic that sets it apart. Currently available as a free demo on Steam, the game is slated for a PC release in early 2025.
The popularity of roguelikes continues to surge, with developers incorporating their elements into various genres. From action shooters like Returnal to dungeon crawlers such as Hades and its sequel (currently in early access), the roguelike formula proves endlessly adaptable.
Rogue Loops clearly draws inspiration from Hades' top-down perspective and its repetitive dungeon structure, complete with randomized loot and ability upgrades. But Rogue Loops distinguishes itself through a compelling twist: ability upgrades come with significant downsides.
This mechanic echoes Hades' Chaos Gates, which offer powerful buffs at the cost of debilitating effects. However, in Rogue Loops, these "curses" are more pronounced and varied, potentially impacting the entire playthrough.
The game's narrative centers on a family trapped in a deadly time loop. Players navigate five floors of increasingly challenging dungeons, facing unique enemies and bosses. As with most roguelikes, each run unlocks procedural upgrades, enabling players to craft distinct builds using beneficial and detrimental effects.
While a precise release date remains unconfirmed, Rogue Loops is expected to launch on Steam in the first quarter of 2025. Until then, players can experience the first floor via the free demo. Other compelling roguelikes, such as Dead Cells and Hades 2, offer satisfying alternatives in the interim.
