NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end of service (EOS) affects the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, with servers ceasing operation on October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and certain MENA regions can continue playing.
Initially launched in China in September 2021, and globally on June 27th, 2023, the game initially saw success but ultimately failed to maintain momentum. While its Clash Royale-inspired gameplay and wizarding world theme initially resonated with players, the game's performance fell short of expectations.
Reddit discussions reveal player frustration stemming from changes to the reward system. The shift disadvantaged skilled, free-to-play players, favoring those who spent money. Nerfs and slower progression further alienated the non-spending player base.
The game has already been removed from app stores in the affected regions (as of August 26th). However, players in unaffected regions can still experience the game's Hogwarts atmosphere, dorm life, classes, secrets, and wizard duels.
