Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Character Returns in Future Fighting Games
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of the beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility is "always there," particularly given the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
This remastered collection, including Marvel vs. Capcom 2, features three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon. While absent from recent installments, their cameo appearances in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and other Capcom titles have maintained a degree of fan interest.
Matsumoto emphasized that the collection's release offers a chance to reintroduce these characters to a wider audience. He suggested that sufficient fan enthusiasm could even lead to their inclusion in titles outside the Versus series, such as Street Fighter 6. "If there's enough interest," he stated, "they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game." This, he added, would provide valuable creative input for the Capcom team.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself is the culmination of years of planning and collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto revealed that Capcom has long desired to re-release these classic titles, but logistical hurdles and scheduling conflicts delayed the project.
Looking ahead, Matsumoto expressed Capcom's ambition to create a new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode. He highlighted the importance of reintroducing these classic titles to a new generation of players, emphasizing that fan interest will be a key factor in determining future projects.
The producer's comments leave the door open for the return of these iconic characters, dependent on the response to the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection. The future of the Versus series and other legacy titles hinges on fan engagement and the success of this latest release.
