The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken a significant step forward by securing John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein as its writers. Known for their work on the successful film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein are set to bring their creative talents to the screenplay of this much-anticipated adaptation of Hasbro's iconic board game.
The project is being produced by Margot Robbie through her production company, LuckyChap, adding another high-profile name to the film's roster. Daley and Goldstein have been busy, having recently written and directed their original film Mayday, and previously contributed as writers to The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott enlisted Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to write the script, though that iteration never came to fruition. Subsequent attempts in 2015 involved Lionsgate and Hasbro, with Andrew Niccol penning a script, and later in 2019, it was reported that Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be involved. However, none of these earlier efforts materialized.
The current push for the Monopoly movie gained momentum following Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, reigniting hopes that this version will finally "pass Go" and make it to theaters. With a talented team now in place, fans of the classic board game can look forward to seeing how Daley and Goldstein will translate the world of Monopoly into a cinematic experience.
