Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, released late last year, is exceeding expectations. Despite initial technical hiccups and some controversy, the game has reportedly surpassed 200,000 units sold, demonstrating significant player demand. This success comes months after its September 2024 launch across current and last-gen consoles, as well as PC. The news was shared via a tweet from developer Dragami Games, celebrating this impressive sales milestone.
Developed by Dragami Games (though originally created by Grasshopper Manufacture, known for No More Heroes), Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is a vibrant action hack-and-slash title. Players take on the role of Juliet Starling, a chainsaw-wielding cheerleader battling a zombie horde. The remaster features quality-of-life improvements and a significant visual upgrade.
The game's narrative follows Juliet as she uncovers her zombie-hunting heritage amidst a school-wide undead outbreak. Players engage in fast-paced, stylish combat using Juliet's chainsaw, reminiscent of titles like Bayonetta. The original Lollipop Chainsaw, released in 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, achieved even greater success, selling over a million copies. Its unique appeal stemmed partly from the collaboration between Goichi Suda and James Gunn.
While there's currently no word on future DLC or a sequel, the success of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP bodes well for remasters of other niche titles. This positive reception is further underscored by the recent release of Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, another Grasshopper Manufacture title updated for modern platforms.
