Joseph Kosinski is reportedly set to direct a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Dan Gilroy, known for writing and directing Nightcrawler, is tasked with penning the script, building upon an initial draft by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Recently, Gilroy has been engaged in writing multiple episodes for the Star Wars series Andor, which was created by his brother, Tony Gilroy.
Miami Vice is a highly influential NBC police drama, originally created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. It aired for five seasons from 1984 to 1989, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as detectives Crockett and Tubbs. The series is celebrated for revolutionizing television aesthetics, setting new standards for visual and auditory storytelling.
The show was previously adapted into a film in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
Details about the new film are sparse at this point. It's clear, however, that Miami Vice won't be the immediate follow-up to Kosinski's upcoming project, F1, set for release in June. This gives Kosinski ample time to delve into the project and perhaps even select the perfect Ferrari to drive the narrative forward.
