Following my exploration of the Switch's top party games in 2024, the phenomenal release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the best visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This encompasses both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements. The selection spans various regions and release years, offering a diverse range of experiences. The order is entirely arbitrary.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection
Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation, though the lack of a physical release was initially disappointing. The 2024 release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, both physically and digitally, is a stunning new entry. It feels like a genuine sequel, though this might not appeal to all. The production values are exceptional, and the shockingly good ending fully justifies its M rating. This unexpected addition to my top games of the year is a testament to Nintendo's achievement. For those preferring to play the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection is readily available. Fans of classic adventure game design and gameplay will find much to appreciate.
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)
A recurring favorite in my "best Switch games" lists, VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action excels in storytelling, music, aesthetics, and especially its memorable characters. Its seamless transition to the Switch platform solidifies its position as a universally recommended title. Regardless of your preference for point-and-click adventures, mixing drinks and impacting lives is an experience not to be missed.
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition is the definitive version of a storytelling masterpiece. This definitive edition includes the original game and substantial additions, resulting in a breathtaking presentation. As a pure visual novel, it shines on the Switch. This gothic horror experience leaves a lasting impact, further enhanced by its exceptional soundtrack.
Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)
While sold separately on the eShop and in physical Japanese imports, the North American Switch bundle allows for a combined review. Both Coffee Talk games offer a relaxing experience with compelling narratives, though they don't quite reach the heights of VA-11 Hall-A. Fans of coffee, engaging characters, pixel art, and captivating music will find this a perfect fit.
Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)
This entry encompasses three titles: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night Remastered, and Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo). All are lengthy but rewarding. Fate/stay night serves as an excellent introduction to classic visual novels, while Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows as a strong subsequent choice.
PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)
Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo shares similarities with Emio, exceeding expectations with its narrative, presentation, and engaging meta-elements. This exceptional mystery adventure game boasts compelling characters, stunning art, and innovative mechanics.
Gnosia ($24.99)
Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia blends adventure and visual novel elements. The objective is to identify and eliminate the Gnosia through information gathering and voting. Despite some RNG-related limitations, Gnosia offers a captivating experience, leading to multiple purchases across different platforms.
Steins;Gate Series (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series on Switch, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, is crucial for introducing newcomers to the genre. While the original version is still desired, Steins;Gate Elite is a readily accessible entry point for anime fans. Playing subsequent titles is best after experiencing the original story.
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)
The collaboration of Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes character designer Yusuke Kozaki results in two exceptional adventure games. Despite the absence of Zero Escape on Switch, AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES is a must-play, offering outstanding storytelling, music, and characters.
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)
This adventure game with multiple endings seamlessly blends disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. The narrative follows a young streamer's daily life, offering an unforgettable experience.
Ace Attorney Series (Variable)
Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch. The series' longevity and dedicated fanbase are well-deserved. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles serves as an ideal entry point, even surpassing the original trilogy in some aspects.
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)
The Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements, featuring a striking art style. While the grotesque imagery might not appeal to all, the compelling narratives and excellent localizations make it a memorable experience.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)
While not a pure adventure game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim incorporates real-time strategy battles. This sci-fi masterpiece is a standout title, equally enjoyable on both PS4 and Switch.
This list isn't limited to a top 10, as I've included several complete series. If you have suggestions, please comment below. I'm always seeking exceptional stories in these genres that perfectly suit the Switch. Thank you for reading!
Note: A separate list of otome games is in progress.
