Nintendo hints that a new 3D Mario game might be revealed soon, though we'll need to wait for official confirmation.
In a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to fan demand for a new mainline Mario title. While he didn't outright confirm a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey is in development, his remarks suggest fans won't be waiting much longer for news.
Stay tuned.“
“Stay tuned,” Bowser stated. “We have an extensive catalog and a long list of intellectual properties that will undoubtedly make their way to the platform.”
Although Bowser's words don't confirm an imminent 3D Mario announcement, they offer some reassurance to fans puzzled by its absence from the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo unveiled its next hybrid console earlier this month, it showcased major titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, but a traditional 3D Mario platformer was notably missing.
The last flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, launched in October 2017, shortly after the original Switch debuted. That means it has been nearly eight years since a major Mario release. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza may temporarily satisfy fans, they aren't the Super Mario Odyssey 2 reveal many were anticipating. Given Mario's central role in Nintendo's vast catalog, it would be more surprising if a new 3D Mario game didn't arrive in the near future.
For now, a new mainline Mario adventure remains unannounced. While we await further updates, you can view Nintendo's updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of the console's launch on June 5, 2025.
