After a near-decade hiatus, Professor Layton is making a triumphant return, and it's largely due to the influence of a certain iconic gaming giant. At Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024, LEVEL-5, the masterminds behind the beloved puzzle-adventure series, unveiled the behind-the-scenes story that led to the announcement of Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.
In a candid conversation with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii at TGS 2024, LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino disclosed that while they believed the series had reached a "beautiful" conclusion with the prequel Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, the influential "Company 'N'"—widely believed to be Nintendo—urged them to revisit the steampunk universe of Professor Layton.
"There hasn’t been [a new title] in almost 10 years. The series concluded briefly," Hino remarked, as reported by AUTOMATON. "Certain individual(s) from the industry really wanted us to release a new game… we had a strong push coming from company ‘N’."
Nintendo’s involvement in reviving the series is no surprise given their longstanding connection with the franchise, which flourished on the Nintendo DS and 3DS platforms. Not only did Nintendo publish many of the Professor Layton titles, but they also consider it one of the standout exclusives for the DS.
"When I heard these opinions, I started to think it would be good to make a new game so that fans could enjoy the series at the level of quality provided by the latest console," Hino explained.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam Overview
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is set a year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. It brings back the iconic professor and his faithful apprentice Luke Triton to the bustling American city of Steam Bison, a place teeming with steam-powered technology. Together, they'll dive into a new adventure to solve a baffling mystery, which, according to the latest trailer, involves the enigmatic Gunman King Joe, a "ghost of a gunslinger lost to the relentless march of progress."
The game will uphold the series' tradition of delivering mind-bending puzzles, this time with assistance from QuizKnock, a team renowned for crafting innovative brain teasers. Fans are particularly enthusiastic about this collaboration, especially following the mixed reception of the previous installment, Layton’s Mystery Journey, which focused on Layton’s daughter Katrielle.
