The Nintendo Switch 2 might look familiar at first glance, but a closer look reveals some significant upgrades, particularly in its Joy-Con controllers, as evidenced by recently surfaced patents.
While Nintendo remains officially silent, reports suggest a major overhaul for the Switch 2's Joy-Cons. These reports, now largely confirmed by Nintendo's patent filings, detail magnetic attachment and surprising mouse functionality.
The patent describes a controller with magnetic mounting: "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing."
The patent also specifies a two-button release mechanism: "The first button and the second button are provided in the longitudinal direction in the top surface of the protrusion…The first button is attracted to the first magnet by a magnetic force. The second button is attracted to the second magnet by a magnetic force.”Remarkably, the patent showcases the Joy-Cons functioning as a mouse. Holding the controller sideways, the shoulder buttons (R1 and R2) act as left and right mouse clicks, with potential joystick-based scrolling.

Illustrations depict both dual-mouse and hybrid configurations—one Joy-Con as a mouse, the other as a standard controller.
The magnetic Joy-Con attachment was an early leak for the Switch 2. The mouse functionality emerged later, though a January teaser subtly hinted at this feature, showcasing the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface like a computer mouse.
