Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti vs. AMD RX 9070 XT: Performance Showdown

Author : Caleb Update:Apr 09,2025

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 may dominate the graphics card market, but its hefty $1,999+ price tag is out of reach for most gamers. Fortunately, you don't need to break the bank to enjoy 4K gaming. Both the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT offer compelling alternatives that deliver an outstanding 4K gaming experience at a more affordable price.

Currently, GPU prices are high due to the surge in demand and limited supply following their launch. However, the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT stand out as the top choices for gamers seeking a high-end gaming experience without the premium cost.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Specs

Comparing the specs of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is complex due to their different architectures. Nvidia's CUDA cores and AMD's Shading Units, though similar in function, are not directly comparable.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT features 64 RDNA 4 compute units, each with 64 shader units, totaling 4,096 shader units. Each compute unit includes two AI Accelerators and one RT Accelerator, resulting in 128 and 64, respectively. Coupled with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, this setup is robust for current games, though it might face challenges at 4K in the future.

In contrast, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti also comes with 16GB of VRAM, but uses the newer GDDR7 memory, which offers higher bandwidth on the same 256-bit bus. It boasts 70 Streaming Multiprocessors, equating to 8,960 CUDA Cores. Despite the higher core count, this doesn't necessarily translate to double the performance.

Winner: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Performance

Despite the RTX 5070 Ti's impressive specs, real-world performance shows both cards excel at 4K and are among the best for 1440p gaming. During my review of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, I anticipated it would trail behind the RTX 5070 Ti, particularly in ray tracing-intensive games like Cyberpunk 2077. However, the AMD card consistently delivered performance within a few frames of the more expensive RTX 5070 Ti.

While the RTX 5070 Ti does lead in certain titles, such as Total War: Warhammer 3, where it achieves 87fps at 4K compared to the 9070 XT's 76fps, the overall performance difference is minimal. The Radeon RX 9070 XT actually averaged 2% faster, a significant achievement given its 21% lower cost.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Software and Features

Choosing the right graphics card today involves more than just hardware specs. Both Nvidia and AMD provide a suite of software features that enhance the capabilities of their cards.

The Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti shines with its DLSS suite, which includes AI upscaling and Frame Generation. The latest DLSS 4 introduces multi-frame generation, capable of producing three AI-generated frames for each rendered frame, significantly boosting frame rates with minimal latency impact thanks to Nvidia Reflex. This feature is best utilized when your base frame rate is at least 45fps, ideally over 60fps.

AMD's Radeon RX 9070 XT supports Frame Generation but only produces one interpolated frame per rendered frame. The standout feature for AMD this generation is FSR 4, which introduces AI upscaling. Unlike previous versions, FSR 4 leverages the Radeon RX 9070 XT's AI accelerators for machine learning-based upscaling, offering sharper images, though not as fast as FSR 3. As this is AMD's first venture into AI upscaling, it's worth noting Nvidia's seven years of DLSS refinement.

Winner: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Price

The current GPU market is fraught with inflated prices due to high demand and low supply. Both Nvidia and AMD set suggested retail prices, but actual prices are determined by retailers and third-party manufacturers. It's hoped that prices will normalize as supply improves.

At its launch, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT was priced at a competitive $599, offering excellent 4K performance, especially with FSR 4 AI upscaling. This pricing harks back to more reasonable launch prices for flagship cards before Nvidia's price increases started with the RTX 2080 Ti.

In contrast, the Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti, despite its similar performance to the 9070 XT, carries a higher base price of $749. The additional cost might be justified by features like Multi-Frame Generation, but whether it's worth it depends on your gaming needs and the games you play.

Winner: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

The Winner Is… the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Both the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti are excellent choices for high-end 1440p and 4K gaming. However, the AMD card's ability to deliver comparable performance at a significantly lower price makes it the clear winner. As prices hopefully return to normal, the Radeon RX 9070 XT remains the top pick for gamers looking to build a powerful gaming PC without the need for multi-frame generation, which is less relevant for those without high-refresh 4K monitors.
