There’s nothing more satisfying in an action RPG than perfectly parrying an enemy attack, turning their aggression into a swift counter-offensive. If you’re aiming for that exhilarating *Avowed* experience, here’s how to master the parry.
How to Unlock Parry in Avowed

Parrying in Avowed isn't an automatic skill; you'll need to unlock it. Navigate to your in-game menu, select "Abilities," then the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located near the top of the middle column. To unlock it, you'll first need to allocate an Ability point to any of the three core ability trees. Once that's done, Parry is yours.
Parry has three ranks, detailed below:
Rank | Player Level Requirement | Level Description |
1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks Parry. |
2 | Player Level 5 | Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun on successful parries. |
3 | Player Level 8 | Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun on successful parries. |
At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," allowing you to parry projectiles like arrows.
How to Parry Attacks in Avowed

Successful parrying requires precise timing—block just before an enemy attack connects. You’ll hear a metallic clang and see a visual cue as the enemy stumbles. The timing varies slightly between enemies, so practice is key. While challenging initially, it's far less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Parrying Limitations
Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging instead. Furthermore, only certain weapons can parry. Single-handed and two-handed weapons generally work, but not when equipped in your off-hand. Shields in your off-hand can parry. Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
What Parrying Does (and Why You Should Use It)
Parrying stuns attackers, creating openings for significant damage. It's a defensive maneuver that simultaneously enhances your offensive capabilities.
However, its effectiveness depends on your build. Melee characters benefit most, while ranged builds may find it less useful. Fortunately, respeccing in Avowed is easy, allowing you to adjust your skillset as needed.
