DC Studios head James Gunn has officially announced that Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere on Max on August 21. Alongside this exciting news, Gunn shared a brief snippet of new footage, showcasing John Cena in character, smirking at the camera against a backdrop of blazing fire. In the clip, someone informs Peacemaker that he is now considered a "superhero."
Gunn expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season, tweeting, "Counting the days until Peace on Earth. I just finished the DI & Mix on the Season Premiere yesterday and wow it’s one of my favorite things ever." The tweet was accompanied by the announcement of the release date and a link to the new footage.
Peacemaker Season 2 follows closely on the heels of the DCU's big-screen debut with Superman, set to release on July 11. This makes Peacemaker Season 2 the third installment in Gunn's rebooted DC Universe, after last year's Creature Commandos TV series and the upcoming Superman film.
The new DCU, spearheaded by Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran, marks a significant departure from the previous DC Extended Universe, which included films like Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Man of Steel. Despite the shift, certain elements from the old universe will carry over. Peacemaker serves as a prime example, transitioning from the DCEU to the DCU between its first and second seasons.
Gunn has indicated that "many strands will remain consistent as far as Peacemaker's story goes," although specifics on what will transition from the DCEU to the DCU remain undisclosed. He confirmed that the entire Team Peacemaker will return with the same cast, including John Cena as Peacemaker, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo.
Moreover, Gunn clarified that Peacemaker Season 2 will be set after the events of both Creature Commandos and Superman, with the latter's storyline having a direct impact on Peacemaker's narrative.
