Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Devices in 2025
Pokemon GO players using older Android devices face an upcoming challenge. Two updates, scheduled for March and June 2025, will end support for 32-bit Android phones, rendering the game unplayable on these devices. Players affected should promptly save their login credentials and plan to upgrade their phones to continue their Pokemon GO journey.
This change impacts a significant number of older models, though the exact list isn't exhaustive. The game, launched in July 2016, boasts a substantial player base, exceeding 110 million active users in December 2024, according to ActivePlayer reports. However, Niantic's move to optimize the game for newer devices necessitates this difficult decision.
The official Pokemon GO website, in a January 9th announcement, detailed the upcoming changes. The March update will initially affect some Samsung Galaxy Store users, while the June update specifically targets 32-bit Android devices from Google Play. While a complete list of affected devices wasn't provided, the announcement confirmed that 64-bit Android devices and all iPhones will remain compatible. Examples of unsupported phones include:
- Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
- Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
- Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
- LG Fortune, Tribute
- OnePlus One
- HTC One (M8)
- ZTE Overture 3
- Various Android devices released before 2015
Niantic advises affected players to securely store their login details. While they can regain access after upgrading their phones, they will temporarily lose access to their accounts, including any purchased Pokecoins.
Despite this setback for some players, 2025 promises exciting developments for the broader Pokemon franchise. The release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is anticipated, alongside rumored projects such as Pokemon Black and White remakes and a potential new Let's Go title. Further details regarding Pokemon GO's future may be revealed during a rumored Pokemon Presents showcase on February 27th.
