Navigating the vast landscape of *Project Zomboid* on foot is a marathon, not a sprint. Fortunately, many vehicles still function, and if keys are elusive, hotwiring offers a convenient solution. It's simpler than you might think; a few button presses can get you behind the wheel. While not requiring a top-tier build, meeting certain prerequisites is key to successfully commandeering a car.
Hotwiring in *Project Zomboid* allows you to drive a vehicle indefinitely (as long as fuel and condition permit), even without the correct keys. However, **you'll need at least Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills.** Alternatively, choosing the Burglar occupation during character creation bypasses these skill requirements.
How to Hotwire a Car in *Project Zomboid*

Successfully hotwiring a car is a straightforward process:
- Enter the vehicle.
- Access the vehicle radial menu (default key: V).
- Select "Hotwire" and wait a few seconds.
Once you meet the skill requirements, follow these steps on any operable vehicle. The hotwiring process is automated; after completion, press W to start the engine. Remember, fuel levels vary, so securing gas is advisable.
Leveling Up Electrical and Mechanical Skills
If you didn't start as a Burglar, manually increase your Electrical and Mechanics skills through in-game activities:
- Electrical: Dismantle electronics (watches, radios, televisions).
- Mechanics: Remove and reinstall mechanical parts.
Books and magazines also provide skill boosts. Check mailboxes, sheds, and bookshelves during looting. Project Zomboid server admins can use the "/addxp" command (check in-game chat for syntax) to directly grant players skill XP.
You'll need a screwdriver or similar tool for dismantling/installation. Right-click vehicle parts and select "Vehicle Mechanics" for removal.
