Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse into Sega's Next-Gen Fighter
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, this new installment promises a fresh take on the classic fighting series.
The long-awaited sequel follows the 2021 release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a remaster of a previous iteration. While Ultimate Showdown is slated for a Steam release in January 2025, the new Virtua Fighter represents a completely original entry in the franchise, a significant departure from simple remasters.
First shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, the new footage, while not actual gameplay, offers a compelling look at the game's in-engine visuals. The short video showcases meticulously choreographed combat, hinting at a polished and refined fighting experience. This highly stylized presentation, more akin to a cinematic sequence than raw gameplay, highlights the game's evolution.
A Visual Evolution for Virtua Fighter
The showcased visuals represent a significant shift for the franchise. Moving away from its signature polygonal style, the new Virtua Fighter embraces a more realistic aesthetic, striking a balance between the visual styles of Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The trailer features Akira, the series' iconic character, sporting new outfits, a departure from his traditional look.
Development is led by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the acclaimed Yakuza series and also involved in the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster. This studio is also responsible for Sega's upcoming Project Century. While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's previous comments suggest a bold new direction for the franchise.
Sega's commitment to revitalizing Virtua Fighter is evident, as highlighted by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's enthusiastic declaration during the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The company's continued unveiling of glimpses into the game's development only serves to heighten anticipation for this highly anticipated return.
