If you're eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie, you're not alone. The acclaimed director, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, is still actively working on this project, and we have a reassuring update straight from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper.
"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the eagerly anticipated film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
Currently shrouded in mystery, one of the few confirmed details about Levy's Star Wars film is its setting. It will take place after The Rise of Skywalker, as confirmed by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. In an interview with Deadline in February, she described the movie as "a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same conversation, Kennedy also mentioned that the film would follow the release of *The Mandalorian and Grogu* in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she elaborated. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this intriguing project. With Tropper's optimistic comments, fans can take heart that progress is being made, though patience will still be required. The film is slated for release no earlier than the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027.
Since the release of Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has not launched a new Star Wars film, and several planned projects have been canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Notably, a Star Wars movie previously slated for a late 2026 release was removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, including the recent departure of screenwriter Steven Knight, who took over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Disney remains committed to featuring Rey prominently in future Star Wars films, as highlighted in a recent THR report.
Moreover, Disney's plans for Star Wars extend beyond these projects. Last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, contrary to initial reports.
The next Star Wars content to hit your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with an exciting triple premiere episode.
