Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-Inspired Fan Game
Sonic Galactic, a fan-made title from Starteam, evokes the spirit and gameplay of the critically acclaimed Sonic Mania. This isn't just another fan game; it's a love letter to classic Sonic, appealing to players who appreciate pixel art and the fast-paced platforming of the Genesis era.
The game's development spans at least four years, with its initial unveiling at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo. Starteam's vision is a reimagining of Sonic as a 32-bit title, reminiscent of a hypothetical Sega Saturn release. The result is a retro-inspired 2D platformer that stays true to its roots while adding unique elements.
The recently released second demo (early 2025) offers a substantial gameplay experience. Players can control the iconic trio – Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles – across fresh, meticulously crafted zones. Adding to the roster are two new playable characters: Fang the Sniper, a returning favorite from Sonic Triple Trouble, and Tunnel the Mole, a newcomer hailing from Sonic Frontiers.
Each character boasts unique level paths, enhancing replayability. The special stages, clearly inspired by Sonic Mania, challenge players to collect rings within a time limit in a 3D environment. While a complete playthrough of Sonic's levels takes approximately an hour, the additional characters currently offer a single stage each, resulting in a total playtime of around two hours. This is a substantial offering for a demo.
