Sony has recently provided an update on the nostalgic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes for the PS5, along with information about the future of additional themes for the console.
In a recent tweet, Sony announced that the beloved classic themes will be leaving the PS5 on January 31, 2025. However, fans can take heart in knowing that these themes will make a comeback at a later date. This news is a welcome relief for PS5 users who have relished the nostalgic boot-up sounds reminiscent of past consoles.
“Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow,” Sony stated. “Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”

On the downside, Sony followed up with another tweet stating that they have no plans to introduce more themes in the future. Their statement read:
“While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”
This news has disappointed many fans who were hoping for more customization options. Sony has not yet added themes to the PS5, a feature that was available on previous consoles, and it seems that won't change during this console generation.
The nostalgia themes were released in celebration of the 30th anniversary of PlayStation on December 3, 2024, allowing PS5 users to customize their home screen and menus to reflect the PSOne, PS2, PS3, and PS4. The PSOne theme features the classic console on the home screen background, the PS2 theme showcases its iconic menu shapes, the PS3 theme includes its wave background, and the PS4 theme adds similar wave patterns seen in the previous generation. Each theme also incorporates the unique sound effects of its respective console, enhancing the nostalgic experience.
