Set to release on September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man will be the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic’s Universes Beyond line, following Final Fantasy. It marks the third such set overall, with the 2023 Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set being the first. Unlike previous releases, this set won’t include preconstructed Commander decks. Instead, the cards in the Scene Box shown above won’t be Standard-legal; they’re designed specifically for Commander play.
Last year’s Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and others marked Magic’s initial entry into the Marvel universe, but Spider-Man will be the first full set dedicated to the comics. Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall explains why this approach was necessary: “Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he’s encountered over the years. Picking characters from the Spider-Man canon as part of a wider set would leave far too many beloved figures on the cutting room floor.”
McCall adds, “When we create a card that reflects Spider-Man’s iconic traits—great power and great responsibility—there’s room for mechanical depth because fans already understand the story behind the card. We don’t have to simplify Universes Beyond cards; we just need to choose moments that resonate, and they’ll naturally connect with fans.”
Head Designer Mark Rosewater further elaborates on translating Spider-Man’s essence into Magic’s color pie. “The color pie is versatile enough to express heroism and villainy across all five colors. For instance, Spider-Man embodies white for his sense of duty and altruism, blue for his scientific ingenuity, and green for his connection to nature and destiny.”
“We’re not limiting ourselves to any single comic run or series.” Alongside the Scene Box, the set includes Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all showcased in the gallery above. Additionally, this marks the return of Welcome Decks—introductory themed decks often distributed by game stores to help newcomers learn the game in a low-pressure environment.
This year’s Final Fantasy set isn’t the only Marvel-inspired release on the horizon. Wizards of the Coast also announced an Avatar: The Last Airbender-themed set. Two more in-universe sets are planned before that: Tarkir: Dragonsorm and Edge of Eternities.
