Splitgate 2: The "Halo Meets Portal" Sequel Arrives in 2025
1047 Games, the creators of the hit multiplayer FPS Splitgate, has unveiled its highly anticipated sequel: Splitgate 2. Launching in 2025, this free-to-play game promises a fresh take on the classic arena shooter formula while retaining the core elements that made the original a phenomenon.
A New Era of Portal Combat
The July 18th cinematic trailer showcased a reimagined portal mechanic, aiming for a deeper, more rewarding gameplay loop. CEO Ian Proulx emphasized a long-term vision, stating the goal is to create "a game that can last a decade or more." Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, added that the portal system has been redesigned to challenge skilled players while remaining accessible to all.
Built on Unreal Engine 5, Splitgate 2 will introduce a faction system, adding strategic depth without sacrificing the core Splitgate experience. While familiar, the game promises a completely fresh feel. It will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.
The Legacy of Splitgate
The original Splitgate, often described as a blend of Halo and Portal, quickly gained popularity after its 2019 demo release, boasting 600,000 downloads in a single month. Its immense popularity even led to server outages as the studio scaled to meet demand. Following its official release in September 2022, 1047 Games announced they would cease updates to focus on a revolutionary sequel.
Factions, Maps, and More
Splitgate 2 introduces the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions – Aeros (dashing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). These factions offer unique playstyles, adding a layer of strategic depth without transforming the game into a hero shooter.
While full gameplay details are under wraps until Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer provides a tantalizing preview. The developers confirmed that the trailer accurately represents the game's visuals, maps, weapons, and even the return of dual-wielding.
Exploring the Lore
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will allow players to delve into the game's lore through comics, collect character cards, and even take a quiz to determine their ideal faction.
