As Stellar Blade prepares for its PC launch, developer SHIFT UP has responded to player worries about DRM protection and region restrictions. Here's what you need to know about these hot-button issues.
Stellar Blade PC Updates
SHIFT UP Responds to DRM Controversy
With Stellar Blade coming to PC, SHIFT UP recently clarified their stance on using Denuvo anti-tamper technology. In a May 17 social media post, the studio assured players they've "carefully optimized the DRM implementation to preserve overall frame rates while actually improving minimum performance in some scenarios."
Denuvo serves as digital rights management software that combats piracy, but its perceived impact on game performance has sparked debate within the gaming community. Many players expressed frustration about its inclusion, despite publishers routinely adopting the technology.
The studio shared comprehensive benchmark data comparing DRM and DRM-free versions. Their tests showed no meaningful difference across key performance metrics including average, minimum, maximum, and percentile frame rates.
Notably, SHIFT UP confirmed full mod support won't be restricted - a common concern with DRM-protected titles. While fans appreciated the transparency, many continued advocating for complete removal of Denuvo for broader accessibility.
Resolving Platform Restrictions
Another complication involves PlayStation Network's geographical limitations affecting PC availability. Though the game doesn't mandate PSN connectivity, its distribution remains unavailable in over 130 unsupported countries.
SHIFT UP acknowledged they're "actively collaborating with our publishing partners to resolve regional availability constraints as quickly as possible." They emphasized parity between PC and PS5 editions, promising "all players will receive identical content without early adopters facing any future disadvantages."
While the developer's responsiveness earned praise, the community maintains hope for eventual removal of both DRM and platform-based region blocks. Stellar Blade launches on Steam June 11 - follow our coverage for the latest developments on these ongoing discussions.
