A recently published patent suggests the Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer mouse functionality. Read on to learn more about these exciting new controller features and the official date for the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
Switch 2: Joy-Con Revolution?
Mouse Support Confirmed?
Nintendo's February 6th, 2025, WIPO patent filing reveals intriguing new Joy-Con features for the Switch 2, most notably, potential mouse functionality. The patent details how the Joy-Cons could detect movement across a surface, acting as a mouse. This corroborates speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which briefly showcased the controller being swiped across a surface. While Nintendo remains tight-lipped, this patent significantly strengthens the likelihood of this innovative feature.
Enhanced Joy-Cons and New Controllers
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons appear similar to their predecessors, remaining detachable. However, the patent highlights their potential mouse capabilities, describing a sensor that detects reflected light changes as the controller moves across a surface. A new charging dock, accommodating up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously, is also mentioned. A magnetic attachment, complete with a wrist strap, is detailed for securely connecting the Joy-Cons to the console.
The patent also introduces a novel controller design: a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. These halves can also be combined using a separate attachment to form a traditional controller.
It's crucial to remember that the patent's details may not fully represent the final Switch 2 product. Nintendo has yet to officially confirm any of these features.
